City of Sydney rules
The City of Sydney's repainting guidelines say you generally do not need permission to repaint a building in a heritage conservation area, but a heritage-listed building needs development consent or a written exemption first. Either way, face brick, tiles and stone are never painted, and decorative details are picked out rather than painted over in one colour.
